There is a man sitting on a lotus flower, chained by a rope, struggling tenaciously, while Amitabha's hand pulls hard and his feet are pressed to the ground. In front of him, the Bodhisattva of Great Strength is scolding with his finger and encouraging the man to give up his resistance, while Guanyin is holding lotus flowers and trying to lift the man.
This painting shows Amitabha and the Bodhisattvas in an unusual posture, as they usually appear graceful and kind. People would wonder what the meaning of this painting is. This painting actually has a very deep meaning.
There is a man seated here who appears to be devoutly meditating, but he has black flames covering his body. He is a symbol that we are trying to achieve inner peace, but are constantly surrounded by the undesirable elements of our thoughts and chaotic environment. Amitabha and the Bodhisattvas represent the Buddhist philosophy with its attempt to help us achieve true peace.
