The Great Light In Mind

The original intention of this work was to understand the meditation experience of Buddhist Zen scholars and to simulate a realistic, visual, multi-sensory experience of meditation for the average person.
The background and research was about the benefits of meditation on the negative psychology of contemporary people, such as restlessness and anxiety, and then extended to the changes in brain waves caused by meditation, as different states of thought will have different brain waveforms, and in meditation the brain waves are in theta value. This part of the research was the theoretical support for the use of the brainwave detector in the later stages of the project; later, after understanding meditation, contact with meditators and questionnaire research, I summarised four factors that are important for meditation from the meditator's perspective: body, eyes, hearing and smell, i.e. touch, sight, hearing and smell. This led to my idea for the whole interactive device: 1. The device is in the shape of a stable triangle, so that the body and mind can be more stable in such a structure - "touch" 2. The incense and meditation music are "olfactory" and "auditory". Considering that the whole installation, together with the appearance of the meditation, is axisymmetrical, I put the incense and sound into the two yin and yang boxes to integrate the whole in appearance and to emphasise the concept of "yin and yang" in the pursuit of balance.
